Why rum needs no date

Rum, like all spirits, is a drink with no best-before date. Usually at around 40 percent alcohol it sits well above the 10 percent mark and is exempt from a best-before date under EU law. The high alcohol content preserves it permanently, so rum practically does not spoil.

Unopened and stored upright, a bottle of rum keeps for decades. As with whiskey: rum does not age further in the bottle — maturation happens only in the wooden barrel and ends at bottling. A twelve-year-old rum stays a twelve-year-old however long it sits in the cupboard.

After opening, rum stays good for years. Aromatic dark and spiced rums in particular can shift their aroma slightly over a very long time once there is a lot of air in a nearly empty bottle. For full enjoyment it is worth not nursing an opened bottle down to a small remnant over many years. Stored upright, cool and dark, rum stays most aromatic.

It is worth a glance at the label with flavoured styles: spiced rum, rum with honey or rum-based liqueurs often contain sugar, spices or cream. These additions can flake out, crystallise or — with cream-based products — even spoil over time. Such bottles therefore often do carry a best-before date and should be stored cool after opening and drunk within a few months. Plain, unsweetened rum, by contrast, is untouched by these limits and keeps practically forever — another reason to glance at the ingredient list when buying.

How do I spot old rum?

Rum barely spoils — it is all about the aroma:

1
Barely spoils

Rum does not become undrinkable; stored properly there is no safety risk.

2
Flatter aroma

With a nearly empty bottle, the aromas grow duller and less intense over the years.

3
Sugar crystals/haze

Heavily sweetened rums can form crystals — harmless. Foreign particles, by contrast, are a reason to set it aside.

Shelf life at a glance

Only the fill level of the opened bottle really counts:

Store it right

The right storage keeps rum aromatic for a long time:

Store upright — the high alcohol would attack a lying cork.

Cool and dark — direct sunlight and heat harm colour and aroma.

Seal tightly — so as little alcohol as possible evaporates.

Decant the dregs — pour nearly empty bottles into smaller vessels to reduce air contact.

Common myths

A few myths surround rum:

"Rum ages further in the bottle."

No — maturation ends at bottling. Rum ages only in the wooden barrel.

"Rum can go bad."

Practically not — the high alcohol preserves it. Only the aroma changes slowly.

"Store rum on its side like wine."

Wrong — rum stands. The strong alcohol attacks a lying cork.

Good to know

A nearly empty, aromatically flat rum need not go: it is great for baking, rumtopf, sauces or cocktails, where the fine nuances merge with other ingredients anyway. So even the last of the bottle gets used well. And thanks to the high alcohol, even a years-old open bottle in the cupboard is never a safety risk — at most a question of aroma.

Frequently asked

Can rum go bad?
Practically not. The high alcohol content of around 40 percent preserves it. Unopened, rum keeps decades; opened, many years — only the aroma changes slowly.
Why does rum have no best-before date?
Because at around 40 percent alcohol it sits above the 10 percent mark. Drinks at or above 10 percent ABV are exempt from a best-before date under EU law.
Does rum age further in the bottle?
No. Maturation happens only in the wooden barrel and ends at bottling. A twelve-year-old stays a twelve-year-old however long it sits in the cupboard.
Do you store rum upright or on its side?
Upright. Unlike wine, the high alcohol would attack a lying cork and cause cork taint.
